In 1995, Jorge graduated in Enology/Winemaking from Vila Real University (final training degree was done in Italy). He then joined Real Companhia Velha for seven years and was involved in the initial development of the Fine Wine Division. He focused on studying the best possible grape varieties and their adaptation to different viticultural practices so to create wines of an international standard of quality.
Having graduated from Cambridge University and with an MBA from INSEAD, Sophia set up Quinta de la Rosa with her father, Tim, in 1988. Before 1988, Tim was growing grapes at Quinta de la Rosa and selling them to Sandemans to make into port. Using her experience from working as a management consultant at Booz Allen, Sophia helped launch La Rosa ‘s ports onto the market and has developed a global network of importers. Thanks to a conversation with wine maker, David Baverstock, La Rosa was one of the first Douro producers to commercialise their red wines in 1990.
Tim spent most of his childhood living in Portugal with his mother at La Rosa. He was educated in England and after graduating from Cambridge University Tim joined Dunlop Company to work in Ghana, Lebanon and Italy. In Beirut he soon met Patricia and before long they were married and had three children, Sophia, Philip and Juliet. When his father died in 1971 he joined Eucalyptus Pulp Mills, the family's pulp company based in Portugal, as Deputy Chairman and his life was to become inextricably linked with Portugal once more.
Quinta de la Rosa is run by Sophia Bergqvist and is assisted by her brother (Philip) and Jorge Moreira, La Rosa's wine maker. Jorge is supported by viticulturalist, Nuno Barros and assistant wine maker, Hugo Rodrigues. As Sophia is often on the road selling La Rosa's products, team work and loyalty is vital. Many have worked at La Rosa for more than 10 years and Nelson Gonçalves (bottling line) is fourth generation to work at La Rosa. His father, Salvador, is in charge of making the blends.
