INNOVATION

Family owned and run since 1906 La Rosa is committed to respectful innovation in its pursuit of excellence. Whether it’s being one of the first producers to focus on table wines, or the opening of the Quinta’s restaurant Cozinha da Clara, La Rosa has set its own course and often done things differently.

Winemaking

Quinta de la Rosa was one of the pioneers in the production of table wines in a valley that traditionally only produced Port. In 1991, we took our first step towards realising our full potential by launching the Estate Red.

Fast forward 30 years and roughly two-thirds of our production is table wine – though we will always retain a stead fast commitment to our ancestors by producing a full range of ports. In both the vineyard and the winery, we combine the latest technological advances with the traditional techniques. One such example is when we foot tread our Reserve wines in granite lagares whilst using the latest temperature control systems.

Accommodation

La Rosa has been welcoming guests for over 40 years. What started as weekly rentals of Amarela soon turned into a bed and breakfast offering. Gradually, La Rosa has expanded into a small hotel with 23 rooms. We are keen to ensure that all guests feel like they are staying on a family run winery. As such, we have tried to create a comfortable and modern space that is lightly touched by our family history. Our pool is the same that Claire installed in the 1950s – the very first of its kind in the Douro.

Tours and Tastings

From a corridor behind our first office grew one of the first winery shops in the Douro to sell direct to customers. In the early years when the Douro was still very undiscovered, we offered tours to anyone who happened to be passing by. We now offer multiple daily tours and tastings.

Restaurant

Cozinha da Clara, named after Claire Bergqvist who loved her food but loathed to cook, opened its doors in 2017.  By highlighting the best of the region’s cuisine and pairing it with our wines, it helps promote the Douro’s culinary credentials which continue to rapidly improve.

Beer

Inspired by the success of our wines, La Rosa created the first brewery in the Douro. The brewing venture is yet another family affair with Philip Bergqvist (Sophia’s brother) leading the project ably assisted by Kit, and of course, La Rosa’s winemaker, Jorge Moreira.
